Astrofest 2016 – increasing public interest in light pollution

Astrofest 2016 was bigger than ever before! The event this year featured a new award category, sponsored by Pendoley Environmental, to recognise ‘Best New Talent’ in Astrophotography.  The title awarded by John Goldsmith went to Wayne Riley.

Pendoley Environmental hosted a stand manned by Dr Kellie Pendoley, Principal and Director of Pendoley Environmental and a Director on the the Board of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), and Ellen Boylen.

The pair shared their knowledge and experience of the emerging fields of the measurement, impacts, and reduction of Artificial Light at Night (ALAN). A high growth research area, the crowds were particularly interested in Sky42™, the impacts of urban light pollution on human and ecosystem health, and the IDA Dark-sky Places Program.
